Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga's preferred trade destination revealed amid contract stalemate

The Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga remain locked in a contract stalemate.

Kuminga is a restricted free agent, limiting his overall negotiating power. Reports have indicated that he's seeking $30 million per year, while it seems the Warriors are hoping to stay more in the $20 million a year ballpark. But if no outside teams give Kuminga an offer sheet, his only other option is to end up in a sign-and-trade.

Luckily for Kuminga, if he wants out, there are multiple teams who have been rumored as such sign-and-trade partners. The two most frequent fliers on this list are the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.

And according to NBA insider Marc Spears, Kuminga has a preference: Sacramento.

Kuminga "wants to go" to the Kings, Spears said on ESPN.

"The Kings are offering a starting spot," Spears added. "He's talked on a Zoom call with Scott Perry, BJ Armstrong and also with Doug Christie. He's in."

Kuminga likely doesn't see a path to major minutes with Golden State, at least this season. His role diminished considerably last campaign after the Warriors traded for Jimmy Butler.

Head coach Steve Kerr admitted that he didn't love the floor spacing when Butler, Kuminga and Draymond Green were all on the court together. And the Warriors don't have any plans to suddenly shift away from Butler or Green this season.

In the playoffs, Kuminga proved his value. Butler and then Stephen Curry went down injured. Kuminga showed his scoring prowess in their place.

It was enough to have the Warriors wanting to keep him for medium value, but Kuminga sees his worth as higher than that, and it has led to this standoff.

Golden State probably doesn't really want to deal Kuminga to a fellow California club and watch him blossom there, but it also might be the only way to end this saga.
