Trade idea has Dodgers acquiring $21 million starter to bolster rotation
The Los Angeles Dodgers, one of Major League Baseball's premier teams, are considering acquiring Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Nick Martinez to strengthen their rotation amidst ongoing injury issues. Martinez, who has a current record of 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in five starts, signed a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer with the Reds and will be a free agent at the end of the season. Analysts suggest the Dodgers have sufficient prospect capital to secure Martinez, who could also serve as a bullpen arm, enhancing their playoff push. In exchange, the Reds could benefit from acquiring a big league outfielder such as James Outman or Dalton Rushing, addressing their lack of outfield talent. The proposed trade appears beneficial for both teams, with the Dodgers gaining rotation depth and the Reds obtaining a promising outfielder with limited playing time prospects in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are exploring the possibility of acquiring Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Nick Martinez to address their injury-plagued rotation and enhance their chances in the playoffs.
Nick Martinez, currently with a 0-3 record and a 5.40 ERA over five starts, joined the Reds on a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer and will become a free agent after the season.
Analysts posit that the Dodgers possess ample prospect capital to trade for Martinez, who could also be utilized as a bullpen arm during their playoff campaign.
The trade could see the Cincinnati Reds receiving a promising outfielder like James Outman or Dalton Rushing, which would be advantageous given their current lack of big league outfield talent.
This potential trade presents a mutually beneficial scenario, offering the Dodgers rotation depth and providing the Reds with a valuable outfielder from the Dodgers' prospect pool.
The Dodgers' current rotation, though talented, is hampered by injuries, making the acquisition of a reliable pitcher like Martinez a strategic move for the rest of the season.
Nick Martinez's contractual situation with the Reds and his potential free agency status add a layer of urgency and opportunity for the Dodgers to capitalize on his availability.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, and one analyst believes they should look to acquire another starting pitcher.
ESPN MLB analyst David Schoenfield listed Cincinnati Reds’ Nick Martinez as a possible trade candidate this season. If the Reds are going to move him, MLB analyst Zach Pressnell of Newsweek believes the Dodgers should look to acquire him.
“The perfect trade suitor for Martinez is the Los Angeles Dodgers, and they have plenty of prospect capital to land the righty,” Pressnell wrote. “The Dodgers' starting rotation is loaded with talent, but they're dealing with a lot of injuries again this season.
“Los Angeles could use a reliable righty like Martinez, especially since he could double as a bullpen arm down the stretch,” Pressnell added. “In return, the Reds could land an impact outfield prospect like James Outman or Dalton Rushing. Landing either of these two outfielders would be a huge win for Cincinnati, considering the lack of big league talent it has in the outfield.”

On paper, the trade pitch would make sense for both sides as the Dodgers would bolster its rotation, while the Reds get a big league outfielder in Outman or Rushing, who don’t have a clear path to playing time with the Dodgers.
Martinez signed a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer with the Reds this offseason and will be a free agent at the end of the year. Martinez would be for the Dodgers' playoff push and be a backend starter to add depth to the rotation.
Martinez is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 5 starts this season.
