Tim Tszyu is set to face Sebastian Fundora in a rematch for the WBC super welterweight title on July 19 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, where they first met. Originally expected to face Keith Thurman, Tszyu now has a chance to avenge his previous March 2024 split decision loss to Fundora, where he fought with impaired vision due to a cut caused by an elbow. After a subsequent defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev, Tszyu returned to form with a fourth-round KO of Joey Spencer. Fundora, who replaced Thurman in their first fight, has defended his title once since defeating Tszyu. For the rematch, Fundora will be stripped of his WBO title to defend his WBC belt against Tszyu, demonstrating both fighters' eagerness for a high-stakes showdown.

Tim Tszyu to rematch Sebastian Fundora in chance for world title revenge

Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora will face each other in a rematch for the WBC super welterweight title, scheduled for July 19 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, the site of their first encounter.

Initially expected to fight Keith Thurman, Tszyu now has the opportunity to avenge his March 2024 split decision loss to Fundora, where he was hampered by impaired vision due to a cut from an accidental elbow.

Following a more devastating loss to Bakhram Murtazaliev in October, which saw Tszyu dropped four times, he regained confidence with a fourth-round KO victory over Joey Spencer.

Sebastian Fundora, who stepped in to replace the injured Thurman in their initial match, claimed the WBO title and vacant WBC strap by defeating Tszyu and has since defended his title against Chordale Booker.

For agreeing to the rematch with Tszyu, Fundora will be stripped of his WBO title, putting his WBC championship on the line, showcasing both fighters' determination for a significant bout.

Fundora expressed his willingness to rematch Tszyu earlier this year, noting the excitement the fight would bring, especially to Australian fans.

Tom Naghten, a senior editor at The Sporting News Australia, provides comprehensive coverage of the boxing landscape, including this anticipated rematch.

Tim Tszyu (25-2) is set to face Sebastian Fundora (22-1-1) in a high-stakes rematch for the WBC super welterweight title.

The expectation was that Tszyu would face Keith Thurman next but a report from Boxing Scene has revealed that the Australian former world champion will now get the chance to avenge his March 2024 defeat to the towering southpaw.

Sporting News has confirmed those reports, which list July 19 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena as the possible landing spot, seeing the pair reunite at the site of their first meeting.

On that occasion, Fundora, 27, stepped in at late notice to replace the injured Keith Thurman before upsetting the Australian via 12-round split decision to claim the WBO title, as well as the vacant WBC strap.

A cut on Tszyu’s head caused by an accidental elbow at the end of the second round saw him fight the remainder of the bout with seriously compromised vision.

Tszyu then suffered a far more devastating defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev in October, being dropped four times on the way to a third-round stoppage.

Now, having got back in the winners’ circle with a confidence-boosting fourth-round KO of Joey Spencer earlier this month, the 30-year-old Tszyu is charting a course back to the world title.

Fundora has made one defence of the belts since beating Tszyu, claiming a comfortable round four TKO win over the outclassed Chordale Booker in March.

The Florida native was ordered to defend his WBO strap against rising American Xander Zayas but, for facing Tszyu, he’ll now be stripped of that title and put his WBC championship on the line against the Sydneysider.

Earlier this year, Fundora spoke about his willingness to face Tszyu for a second time.

“Of course, of course,” Fundora said, when asked about the possibility of a rematch on The Punch Podcast.

“It's just if the other side wants to take it as well.

“I'm pretty sure the Australians would love it. I think it's a great fight.”

More to come.
