Phillies blockbuster trade pitch lands Angels 15-HR slugger for steep package

The Philadelphia Phillies are under as much pressure as any team in 2025, so Jul. 31 is an incredibly important date.

Though they have the best record in Major League Baseball at 35-19, the Phillies are inherently not a perfect team. And the end of July brings the trade deadline, which is their last chance to get as close to perfection as possible.

In general, the Phillies have a strong lineup. If there's anything to nitpick, though, it's the outfield, which sports a collective 0.0 fWAR, which is 24th among the 30 clubs across the league.

The outfield trade market doesn't appear to be all that deep this season, but one baseball writer sees a fit for the Phillies on the Los Angeles Angels' roster.

On Tuesday, Garrett Kerman of ClutchPoints named Angels left fielder Taylor Ward, who leads his team with 15 home runs this season, as a trade target for the Phillies.

"The Phillies are in win-now mode, boasting a potent lineup but seeking a reliable right-handed bat to balance their outfield," Kerman wrote.

"Ward’s versatility and power fit perfectly in Philadelphia, where he could slot into left field or serve as a high-quality fourth outfielder and DH option. The Phillies have the prospect depth to make a significant offer without mortgaging their future."

Kerman's proposed prospect package, however, is quite steep. He theorized that Philadelphia would have to give up right-handed pitcher Mick Abel and outfielder Justin Crawford, while re-acquiring lefty Samuel Aldegheri, who they sent to the Angels in the Carlos Estévez trade last summer.

In theory, it's a somewhat fair two-for-two swap, but Abel and Crawford have the upside to bite the Phillies for letting them go down the line. And Ward might be a somewhat redundant piece for Philadelphia, which already has a bat-first corner outfielder in Nick Castellanos.

Still, if Ward keeps hitting like he has over the last few weeks (1.174 OPS since May 11), anything is certainly possible.
