NFL training camp news: Broncos make major contract decision on Courtland Sutton, Titans waive Treylon Burks, Terry McLaurin still not paid

The Denver Broncos have officially restructured wide receiver Courtland Sutton’s contract.

“Sutton, a team captain, agreed to a four-year, $92 million extension that will run through the 2029 season, sources told ESPN. The deal includes $41 million in guarantees, multiple sources said, with the $14 million Sutton could have earned this season (a $13.5 million base salary and a $500,000 workout bonus) now fully guaranteed to go with $27 million in guarantees over the four years of the extension.” Jeff Legwold reported

It’s a notable move, especially considering Sutton skipped voluntary workouts this offseason and has been loosely connected to trade rumors dating back to last year.

The Broncos are signaling they still view Sutton as a key offensive weapon, at least for now.

Titans waive Treylon Burks

While Denver is doubling down on their top wideout, the Tennessee Titans are doing the exact opposite.

On Monday, the team waived wide receiver Treylon Burks in a stunning roster decision that ends a disappointing chapter in Nashville.

Burks was a first-round pick in 2022, famously taken with the selection acquired in the A.J. Brown trade. But after two underwhelming seasons marred by injuries and inconsistency, the Titans decided it was time to cut ties.

With Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett leading the current WR room, Burks became the odd man out in a new look offense under head coach Brian Callahan.

Commanders, Terry McLaurin still in stalemate over extension

With Sutton now having his new contract extension, the spotlight shifts to another wide receiver situation brewing quietly in Washington: Terry McLaurin’s absence from a contract extension.

McLaurin, who’s been the most consistent weapon for the Commanders over the past four seasons, is entering the final year of his deal. If Sutton, who has never had a 1,100-yard season since 2019, can earn that kind of pay boost, then McLaurin, who’s put up five straight 1,000-yard seasons with a revolving door at quarterback, should be looking at a significantly larger number.

Washington’s new regime has shown interest in locking up young pieces, but so far, no deal has been finalized for their number one receiver.

As other wideouts secure the bag, McLaurin’s next contract could become one of the top storylines to watch before week one.
