Following a blockbuster trade that brought Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, the team finds itself on the verge of playoff elimination against the Minnesota Timberwolves. NBA insider Zach Lowe criticized Doncic's defensive performance, particularly highlighting his struggles in the early games of the series. Despite expectations of a strong postseason run with Doncic and LeBron James, the Lakers' defense has suffered without Davis, especially in rim protection and perimeter defense. Lowe questioned the logic behind the trade, suggesting that the Mavericks missed an opportunity to trade Doncic for a package centered around first-round picks. The Lakers' lack of a reliable center has been a significant issue, as evidenced by the limited minutes for their current center options, which may prompt them to seek reinforcements in the offseason.

NBA insider blasts Lakers star Luka Doncic for his defensive effort

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in a major trade that involved sending Anthony Davis to Dallas, raising expectations for a successful playoff run alongside LeBron James.

NBA insider Zach Lowe criticized Doncic's poor defensive efforts in the early games of the playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, noting a pattern of initial underperformance followed by improvement.

The Lakers, facing a 3-1 deficit in their first-round playoff matchup, have struggled defensively without Anthony Davis, particularly in terms of rim protection and perimeter defense.

Lowe expressed skepticism about the trade involving Doncic, suggesting that the Mavericks should have considered trading him for a package involving first-round picks instead of making the deal with the Lakers.

Los Angeles has been exposed in the paint due to their lack of a reliable center, with Jaxson Hayes playing limited minutes and Alex Len only participating in garbage time, indicating a need for offseason adjustments.

The defensive woes of the Lakers have been exacerbated by the absence of Anthony Davis, a five-time All-Defensive Team member, leading to expectations of pursuing defensive reinforcements.

Caleb Gebrewold, a writer with extensive experience, covered the story, noting the Lakers' potential offseason moves to address their defensive shortcomings and center position.

The Los Angeles Lakers were able to land Luka Doncic in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks, sending out Anthony Davis as part of the deal. While many expected the pairing of the five-team All-NBA First Team guard and LeBron James to make a deep postseason run, they are on the brink of elimination, trailing the Minnesota Timberwolves 3-1 in their first-round matchup.

Zach Lowe recently blasted the defensive effort of Doncic over the first four games of the series. Speaking on The Ringer podcast, the NBA insider stated:

"Why do you have to get humiliated at the beginning of every single playoff series before you show the world, like yeah, 'I can actually put in a little bit more of an effort on defense'? Because if you go back and you watch Game 1 and 2 of that Phoenix series, he is so bad defensively that it's laughable," Lowe stated on Monday. "And then all of a sudden, he becomes passable. And yet again, here we are, we're four games into this series and he's just helpless. I've said it before, I wouldn't have done the trade. Almost no one in the NBA would have done this specific trade."

Lowe added that there are smart NBA people who believe that trading Doncic was not a crazy idea. He noted that the Mavericks' decision not to shop him for a package built around first-round picks is where they went wrong.

There were many who expected the Lakers' defense to struggle after trading Davis, who has been named to the All-Defensive Team five times. Their lack of rim protection, in addition to their struggling perimeter defense, has been exposed throughout the first four games of the postseason.

Los Angeles has largely played without a center, getting exposed in the paint. Starting center Jaxson Hayes has averaged just 7.6 minutes per game, while backup Alex Len has only seen the court during garbage time. The Lakers will likely look to address the position this offseason.
