Mariners' Eugenio Suarez trade rectifies a $15 million mistake

The Seattle Mariners had in front of them a chance to make up for a big mistake.

And late Wednesday night, they did just that.

The Mariners had traded away Eugenio Suarez in November 2023. It was a move made with salary in mind, with Suarez due about $15 million across 2024-25. The Arizona Diamondbacks gladly dealt for Suarez then, happy to pick up a power hitter in exchange for what even then felt like a fair price.

Seattle, with limited slugging at third base in this season that has postseason aspirations, were on the verge of regretting that. If Suarez had been traded somewhere else this week, the Mariners would've felt the full wrath of that money-driven error.

But the Mariners got the deal done.

It took three prospects: 1B Tyler Locklear (Mariners’ No. 9 prospect by MLB Pipeline), RHP Hunter Cranton (No. 16), RHP Juan Burgos (No. 17).

That's certainly not an ideal outcome for Seattle, having to give away three promising young players just to receive a guy in return who never had to be sent away in the first place.

It's also a deal they had to make. Led by Cal Raleigh's historic season, the Mariners are in strong position. After already getting first baseman Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks, this is a deal that could make all the difference.

Suarez already has 36 home runs this season, and he should be comfortable with the Mariners, given his past in Seattle. A cool video before the All-Star Game showed a loving embrace between Raleigh and Suarez. These guys know one another.

And the Mariners even got it done without giving up a top-100 prospect. That's the flip side to the prospect haul Arizona received. It was decent quality and good quantity, but the Mariners held on to their top youngsters.

Now they've got Suarez. If he keeps hitting the way he has this season, Seattle will soon forget it ever sent him away in the first place.
