Inter Milan vs. Barcelona final score: Champions League semifinal result, stats as Frattesi settles UCL classic

Context:

Inter Milan secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semifinal, winning 7-6 on aggregate. Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal in extra time after a thrilling match that saw both teams exchange leads multiple times. Despite being on the brink of elimination, veteran defender Francesco Acerbi equalized in stoppage time, forcing the game into extra time. The match was filled with controversial moments, including a VAR-reviewed penalty, and showcased outstanding performances from players like Yann Sommer and Pedri. Inter Milan advances to their second final in three seasons, while Barcelona's hopes for a quadruple and their first final appearance since 2015 were dashed.

Dive Deeper:

  • Inter Milan triumphed over Barcelona with a 4-3 win in the semifinal second leg, taking the aggregate score to 7-6, thanks to Davide Frattesi's extra-time goal, marking a historic and unforgettable match.

  • The match was characterized by relentless action and lead changes, with Inter initially leading 2-0, only for Barcelona to fight back and briefly take the lead late in regular time through Raphinha's goal.

  • Francesco Acerbi, Inter's 37-year-old defender, scored a crucial stoppage-time goal to level the match at 3-3, his first-ever Champions League goal, forcing the game into extra time.

  • Barcelona's comeback efforts were notable, with Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo scoring to erase Inter's early lead, but they ultimately could not overcome Inter's resolve in extra time.

  • The match included controversial calls, such as a VAR-reviewed penalty awarded to Inter and a disallowed penalty for Barcelona, adding to the dramatic tension of the encounter.

  • Yann Sommer, Inter's goalkeeper, delivered an exceptional performance, making crucial saves to keep Barcelona at bay during their attacking surges, especially against Lamine Yamal.

  • Inter Milan's victory means they will compete in their second Champions League final in three seasons, continuing their recent success under Simone Inzaghi, while Barcelona must regroup for a crucial La Liga clash against Real Madrid.

  • Davide Frattesi's extra-time strike gave Inter Milan a UEFA Champions League semifinal triumph for the ages as Simone Inzaghi's side came through a hellacious Barcelona fightback to win 4-3 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate.

  • Those scorelines alone are astonishing but still somehow don't do justice to the overflowing narrative of a tie that will be remembered for decades. For the second time in six days, the Nerazzurri and Blaugrana played out a scintillating 3-3 draw over the course of an undulating 90 regulation minutes.

  • Simone Inzaghi's men seemed surely heading out in stoppage time, but a brilliant finish from the most unlikely source — a first Champions League goal from the 37-year-old central defender Francesco Acerbi — forced the additional period, when Italy midfielder Frattesi enjoyed what is likely to be a career-defining moment.

  • It means Inter are into their second final in three seasons, while Barca's 10-year wait for a return to the showpiece goes on, their quadruple hopes dashed.

  • MORE: Who is Francesco Acerbi? 37-year-old Inter defender scores clutch first Champions League goal vs. Barcelona

  • As they did in Catalonia last week, Inter stormed into a 2-0 lead, with Lautaro Martinez slotting home from Denzel Dumfries' pass and Hakan Calhanoglu converting from the penalty spot. Pau Cubarsi was controversially penalised for a last-ditch tackle on Martinez after a VAR review, needing a specific slow-mo angle to show the incident.

  • Orchestrated by the effervescent Pedri in midfield, Barcelona were transformed after the break. Eric Garcia was the night's first unlikely goalscorer on the volley before a second superb Gerard Martin delivery saw Dani Olmo head home an equaliser with an hour played.

  • Olmo's strike made it 2-2 on the night and 5-5 on aggregate, but even that feels an eternity ago. With 88 minutes on the clock, Barca led for the first time when Ballon d'Or candidate Raphinha hammered past Man of the Match Yann Sommer at the second attempt.

  • Lamine Yamal then drilled against the post from distance, denied repeatedly throughout the match, before the veteran Acerbi produced another remarkable plot-twist with a wonderfully refined near-post finish from Dumfries' cross.

  • Nine minutes into the additional period, Inter took the lead for the fourth and final time in an incredible tie. Substitute Mehdi Taremi and the tireless Marcus Thuram each played their part before Frattesi coolly paused a beat to open up room outside Curbasi and steer a shot beyond Wojciech Szczesny. This time, there was no way back for Barcelona.

Inter Milan vs. Barcelona live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime: Inter win 4-3 after extra time and 7-6 on aggregate to reach the Champions League final!

Those are the bare facts that cannot truly do justice to what we've witnessed. Inter reach the final for the second time in three seasons and they'll surely feel like their name is on the trophy after all that madness. Barcelona were within moments of their first final since 2015 and must now somehow pick themselves up for a Clasico against Real Madrid on Sunday with La Liga glory on the line. All the very best, lads. Thanks for joining us. It's been emotional.

  • 120 mins: Two additional minutes.

  • 119 mins: Lamine Yamal wins the corner. Raphinha bashes it straight under the crossbar and Sommer punches behind. Fermin flicks on the second delivery and Inter survive on their wits.

  • 116 mins: Sommer beats away another Lamine Yamal strike. The rebound comes at Lewandowski far too quickly for him to do anything with it.

  • 114 minsSensational stop from Sommer to deny Lamine Yamal! A save worthy of a place in the final. The teenager looks for his signature finish high into the far corner and the Switzerland No. 1 tips wide at full stretch. He grasps the resulting corner and San Siro roars.

  • 112 mins: Fort blams a cross way over everyone. Barca need much better than that to haul this one from the fire.

  • 110 minsBrilliant save from Szczesny to deny Frattesi a second! That surely would have wrapped it up. More great work from Thuram and Frattesi creams a sweet strike towards the bottom left corner. Barca deal with the corner.

  • 108 mins: Lamine Yamal takes his time and dinks a cross to the far post. Lewandowski can't get over his header and it goes way beyond the crossbar. He'd like to have done better. Dumfries is hobbling off.

  • 106 mins: Gavi bustles into the Inter box, Darmian hacks clear.

  • Kickoff: 2nd Half (ET)

Here we go again. Fifteen more minutes of a tie where "epic" somehow seems to underplay it.

  • Halftime (ET)

Inter thought Barella was in on goal then when Marciniak blew his whistle for halftime in the additional period. Inzaghi is furious and is restrained by his players. More normal stuff here. Barca have 15 minutes to save themselves. Are they out of miracles?

  • 105 mins: Inter killing the clock pretty well here. There will be three minutes added on to this period of extra time as rain teems down at San Siro.

  • 99 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!! Davide Frattesi!!!!!!!

  • Inter ahead again. Excellent centre-forward play from Taremi, who wins the flick-on and then lays off Thuram's for Frattesi to gleefully dispatch a finish beyond Szczesny.

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 98 mins: Garcia makes way, with teenage defender Fort into the fray.

  • 94 mins: No chances of note in the added period yet, but Inter are definitely looking a lot more confident.

  • Kickoff: 1st Half (ET)

We're back underway. This might well come down to whose heads are the least scrambled.

  • Fulltime

My absolute word. It's finished 3-3 again. We're going to extra time. Inter have taken an absolute pasting since halftime and were on the verge of elimination until their non-scoring veteran central defender creamed a finish into the roof of the net. Make it make sense. Alternatively, grab some more popcorn and let's crack on.

  • 90+6 minsLamine Yamal in with a chance to surely win it.... saved by Sommer!

  • 90+3 minsGOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Francesco Acerbi!!!!!!!!!

  • ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?! ACERBI!!!!! He joins the attack in an act of desperation and the veteran defender clips home a wonderful finish from Dumfries' cross like a dyed-in-the-wool striker. It's the 37-year-old's first-ever Champions League goal. What a time to do it!

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 90+2 mins: Barca break from an Inter set-piece, Lamine Yamal on the charge, cracks a low drive against the foot of the post!

  • 90 mins: Lewandowski on for Ferran. There will be five added minutes.

  • 87 minsGOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Raphinha!!!!!!!!

  • SURELY BARCELONA HAVE WON IT! Inter cough up possession inside their own half and Pedri, who has been majestic, is on the spot. He finds Raphinha, whose first effort is blocked. The ball drops back to him and he spanks a volley into the bottom right corner.

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 82 mins: Olmo makes way for Fermin.

  • 81 mins: Inter have now used all their subs. But they look disjointed, rather than fresh. Fermin Lopez is about to join us.

  • 79 mins: An Inter midfield that has been ragged all over the place gets fresh legs as Zielinski and Frattesi replace Mkhitaryan and Calhanoglu.

  • 78 mins: It's Sommer vs. Lamine Yamal again and, with the angle against the youngster, Inter's goalkeeper palms clear.

  • 77 mins: Lamine Yamal digs out one of those whipping, dipping left footers from about 25 yards. Sommer gets across to push behind. Olmo's corner is intercepted at the near post.

  • 76 mins: Araujo replaces Inigo Martinez in Barca's first change. Still no sign of Lewandowski.

  • 74 mins: Olmo, who's improved exponentially from his first-half display, gets busily into the Inter box but his cross is too high for Ferran.

  • 73 mins: Barca zipping passes here, there and everywhere. They win a corner. Olmo takes it short to Lamine Yamal. It comes to nothing. You'd think they'd have Gerard Martin there to deliver, given his left foot is on fire.

  • 70 mins: Ooohhhh, clever. Raphinha goes short to Olmo, who lays it back to Lamine Yamal. His shot deflects over off a Barcelona player. Lautaro is leaving us after a tireless shift. Teremi to come on. Bisseck, who's had a pretty torrid half, is off and the veteran Darmian is into the mix.

  • 69 minsPENALTY OVERTURNED! Wow, another moment where Barca aren't going to be too pleased with the video official. Here's Raphinha over the free-kick bang on the edge of the box.

  • 68 minsPENALTY TO BARCELONA! Inter give the ball straight back to Barca again. Mkhitaryan flies into Lamine Yamal. Does the foul continue into the box? It looks like it.  VAR having a look.

  • 64 mins: If Inter need any encouragement, it's all the space Thuram and Martinez have here. They're unable to work the attack effectively to Dumfries. At the other end, Olmo snaps into a challenge on Bisseck. He heads for the Inter box but can't pick out Ferran. He maybe should have gone alone.

  • 61 mins: Chance for Olmo, but he slips as he shoots. Inter all at sea and it feels like the air has been sucked out of this stadium.

  • 60 minsGOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Dani Olmo!!!!!!

  • BARCA LEVEL IN THE TIE! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT?! Gerard Martin curls another doozy of a ball into the box. No one whatsoever is marking Olmo and he nods home.

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 57 minsOh it really should be 2-2! Garcia again! The right-back ghosts into the box unnoticed again and Sommer scampers back to make a stunning save he should have had no chance of making.

  • 54 minsGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Eric Garcia!!!!!

  • Barca back in the tie from a very unlikely source. Inter get penned into their own box and Gerard Martin floats one for Garcia to stun a wonderful side-footed volley into the net.

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 51 mins: Acerbi heads into the Barcelona net but the visiting defence pushed up before the set-piece came in to catch him offside.

  • 49 mins: Bastoni bundles Lamine Yamal over in the box and lands on him for good measure. The teenager wants a penalty but there's not enough in that.

  • 48 mins: Thuram dispossesses De Jong near halfway and Inter have a three-on-three here. Thuram feeds his captain Lautaro. De Jong gets back to win it when Mkhitaryan might have been the better pass. Still, Barca look unsustainably vulnerable in those situations.

  • 2nd Half: Kickoff

We're back underway. Do Barca have another incredible comeback up their sleeves? How soon do we see Lewandowski?

  • Halftime

Bedlam at San Siro. Inter are 45 minutes from the final and the fans roar their fans off the field. It's a big 15 minutes for Hansi Flick, because his team are hugely up against it and look to have lost their heads. How many minutes has Robert Lewandowski's hamstring got in it.

  • 45 mins+2: We've also had a red card check, presumably against Cubarsi for the challenge. That would have gone down well.

  • 45 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!! Hakan Calhanoglu (pen)!!!!!

  • Szczesny guesses incorrectly. If there were three of him, he wasn't stopping that. Drilled into the bottom left corner. Barcelona absolutely furious with the referee.

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 44 minsMY OH MY, IT'S A PENALTY TO INTER! That looked a perfect tackle in real time but the slow-mo has shown enough doubt to suggest Martinez got to the ball first. I don't like that at all. Calhanoglu to take.

  • 42 minsFabulous last-ditch challenge from Cubarsi on Lautaro! Barca take it clear with the Inter man still down. Now they put it out and there's a VAR check. It'd be a travesty if this is given because that looked a wonderful tackle.

  • 41 minsOhhhhh, that should be 2-0 to Inter! Dumfries takes the throw-in from his latest excursion and takes it long. Cubarsi can only shovel it as far as Calhanoglu, who scuffs his attempt. It's still not far off, with Szczesny rooted.

  • 40 mins: Lamine Yamal into the box, but that's a big challenge from Bastoni. The sort an Italian centre-back absolutely relishes. Now Dumfries leads the counter-attacking charge once again, with Barca able to muzzle him on this occasion.

  • 37 mins: Ooohhh, Barella screams one just wide from distance. They've had a tough period in the match but that would have brought the house down and put Munich within touching distance.

  • 35 mins: Lautaro caught carelessly on the ball on halfway and here come Barca. Olmo takes a whack from Calhanoglu on the edge of the box, plays advantage and Lamine Yamal pulls a cross-shot in between Ferran and the far post. The referee then comes back to book Calhaoglou

  • 33 mins: Lamine Yamal sets one back to Garcia, who delivers a fine ball towards Ferran and Raphinha at the far post. They can't capitalise and that's a couple of half chances that you suspect Robert Lewandowski would gobble up. Fit enough to be on the bench, it looks like Hansi Flick might need him later.

  • 31 mins: A ball into the box for Ferran is cleared behind and Olmo's latest corner isn't up to much as Sommer punches clear. This is Barca's best spell since the opening 10 minute.

  • 30 mins; Pedri has scored some spectacular long-rangers. This attempt is not one of his best, flying way off target into the crowd.

  • 29 mins: Mkhitaryan on the spot to clear Olmo's corner.

  • 28 mins: Olmo with space to advance towards the Inter penalty area. His shot skids wide via a deflection. Corner. Ferran is irritated he didn't get the pass.

  • 26 minsNo penalty! Which is fair, given the ball bounced up onto Acerbi's arm off his thigh. There was nothing he could do about that.

  • 25 mins: Twinkle-toed stuff from Pedri inside the Inter box. He squeezes a cross towards Olmo, who has a couple of goes at prodding home. The cross struck Acerbi on the arm and we're having a check...

  • 21 minsGOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Lautaro Martinez!!!!

  • It's been coming and Lautaro is the man to put Inter in front. Olmo is ransacked inside his own half by Dimarco and suddenly the hosts are through, with Dumfries leaving the chance on a plate for the Argentina striker.

  • Watch in US | UK | Australia | Canada

  • 21 mins: Dumfries lifts a pass to Barella who hits a stinging half-volley from inside the box. Not far away. Inter getting closer.

  • 19 mins: A couple of Inter corners are cleared behind before Dimarco takes one short to Calhanoglu. His speculative shot deflects behind for another.

  • 17 mins; Inter looking a bit more likely now as Mkhitaryan is released down the left channel. Te cross is cleared away from Lautaro by his namesake Inigo Martinez.

  • 16 mins: Thuram onside this time but makes a mess of his eventual shot from the edge of the box after cutting inside Cubarsi.

  • 13 mins: Thuram through on goal, with the Barcelona line a bit scrambled. They've got out on time, though, as the offside flag goes up after the France forward makes a bit of a mess of trying to get around Szczesny.

  • 9 mins; Sharp work from Pedri and Gerard Martin floats one into the box that a combination of Acerbi and Dimarco deal with. Inter break sharply. Fine work from Dumfries, but he appears to freeze amid a lack of options in the Barca box.

  • 7 mins: Calhanoglu looks for a big switch of play out to Dumfries. There's a bit too much on the pass for the Netherlands wingback but that's likely to be a frequent ploy for Inter.

  • 5 mins: Raphinha almost squeezes one through to Ferran. Sommer scuffs a clearance and the visitors win it back before Lamine Yamal overhits his cross to the far post.

  • 4 mins: Dimarco has a couple of nibbles at Lamine Yamal and bring s him down just past halfway. The Inter wingback might be steeling himself for another long evening.

  • 1 min: Inter scored after 30 seconds last week and Barca fancy an even earlier one here. A sweeping move but Ferran has strayed offside.

  • Kickoff: 1st Half

Barca have switched the teams around before kickoff, meaning Inter will attack their Ultras during the first half.  In all honesty, the noise is pounding from all directions as the hosts get us underway.

  • 5 mins before kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. De Jong and Martinez ready to lead out their respective sides. Here they come into a wall of noise.

  • 30 mins before kickoff: The players are going through their warmups. The Inter squad received a rapturous reception. This huge club won the last of their three Champions Leagues in 2010 under Jose Mourinho. They were beaten finalists two years ago. There's no doubt this is massive for the supporters inside San Siro.

  • — Inter ⭐⭐ (@Inter_en) May 6, 2025 50 mins before kickoff: Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been speaking to Inter TV, portraying both unflinching commitment and mathematical nonsense.

  •  We will have to play at 200% to win the match. We know that we can reach the final, and we all dream of that. We will suffer again tonight, and we will suffer together because we want to win it. We are playing at home with our fans, and it would be wonderful to celebrate with them.

  • 1 hr 5 mins before kickoff: Here's a very familiar-looking Inter side. Lautaro Martinez has made it.

  • — Inter ⭐⭐ (@Inter_en) May 6, 2025 1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: Here's the Barca team. Garcia and Gerard Martin get the nod in the full-back positions. The front six is as we expected, with Robert Lewandowski fit enough for a spot on the bench.

  • — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) May 6, 2025 1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly. Barcelona's big quandary comes in the full-backl positions, with Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde both out. Eric Garcia is expected to deputies for Kounde at right-back, with Hansi Flick must decide to keep faith with Gerard Martin at left-back after he was substituted at halftime last week or push Inigo Martinez out to the flank and include Ronald Araujo alongside Pau Cubarsi at the heart of defence.

Inter Milan vs. Barcelona lineups, team news Star striker Lautaro Martinez could only manage 45 minutes in last week's game as he continues to manage a thigh problem. However, a report in the print edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday suggested the Argentina international would be ready to partner first-leg goalscorer Marcus Thuram up front, and that is indeed the case.

  • Hakan Calhanoglu served a domestic suspension at the weekend but that merely meant he was one of several first-choice stars who sat out the weekend win over Verona. Like his opposite number, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi is coming into this one with the benefit of fresh legs.

  • Inter Milan starting lineup (3-5-2): Sommer (GK) — Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni — Dumfries, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Barella, Dimarco — Martinez, Thuram

  • Inter Milan subs: Di Gennaro (GK), J. Martinez, De Vrij, Zielinski, Arnautovic, Frattesi, Asllani, Augusto, Darmian, Re Cecconi, Zalewski, Taremi

  • Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has a headache in both fullback positions and must also weigh rushing any players back against the looming demands on a pivotal La Liga Clasico against Real Madrid this coming Saturday.

  • Jules Kounde will miss out after limping off during the first leg, while Alejandro Balde has not recovered in time from a hamstring injury of his own.

  • Eric Garcia fills in at right-back, while Flick has kept faith with Gerard Martin on the other flank despite him being substituted at halftime last week.

  • The Barcelona front six remains unchanged from the initial encounter, with Robert Lewandowski on the bench as he recovers from a hamstring strain.

  • Barcelona predicted starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Szczesny (GK) — Garcia, Cubarsi, Martinez, Gerard Martin — Pedri, De Jong — Lamine Yamal, Olmo, Raphinha — Ferran

  • Barcelona subs: Inaki Pena (GK), Astralaga (GK), Araujo, Gavi, Lewandowski, Fati, Christensen, Fermin, Pau Victor, Fort, Farre, Darvich
