Guardians' Cade Smith took 106mph line drive off his face — then struck out the next batter
Cleveland Guardians bullpen ace Cade Smith could hardly move before the ball skimmed off the brim of his hat and off the right side of his face.
Mariners slugger Rowdy Tellez hit the line drive back at Smith so hard that after it deflected, it headed to the outfield for an unusual double.
The ball left the bat at 106.6 miles per hour.

After the Guardians checked on Smith, he managed to stay in the game. And the next at bat ended in a strikeout.
Smith told reporters afterward that he's doing OK.
“They’re taking good care of me, but I feel good,” Smith said. “I count myself very lucky.”

Smith also shared that his hat looked the worst for wear.
“I think when I picked up my hat and saw how folded the brim was, that was a pretty good indication that it did take the brunt of the impact,” Smith said.
Smith is on a roll. Friday was his fifth consecutive scoreless outing.
“I tell you what, that kid, nothing shakes him,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt told MLB.com. “He was completely calm. Went to check on him, didn't get shaken. A couple warmup pitches to slow down, punches the next guy out.”
Thankfully, the story ended in this positive way.
