Former NFL star Steve Smith Sr. faces a lawsuit under the 'alienation of affection' law, with a man accusing him of having an affair with his wife, a member of the Baltimore Ravens marching band. The legal action follows social media accusations from February, where explicit messages between Smith and the woman were allegedly shared. The lawsuit, filed in Mecklenburg County, seeks over $100,000 in damages, invoking one of the few remaining state laws that allow such claims. The alleged affair reportedly spanned several months, with meetings continuing until January during a Ravens playoff game. Smith, who spent most of his career with the Carolina Panthers, reportedly met the woman while filming an episode involving the Ravens’ marching band.

Former NFL star Steve Smith Sr faces lawsuit over alleged affair under unusual state law: report

Steve Smith Sr., a former NFL player, is being sued for more than $100,000 under the 'alienation of affection' law, which is still in effect in only six states. This lawsuit was filed in Mecklenburg County Superior Court and centers around alleged infidelity with a woman who was part of the Baltimore Ravens marching band.

The scandal initially erupted in February when a social media account belonging to Antonio Martinez accused Smith of having an affair with his wife, sharing what appeared to be explicit text messages and images allegedly exchanged between Smith and the woman.

The lawsuit claims that the affair continued for several months, with the last encounter purportedly occurring at a hotel in Baltimore in January, coinciding with Smith's presence in the city for a Ravens playoff game.

Smith reportedly met the woman in September while filming an episode of 'The NFL’s Most Interesting Jobs with Steve Smith,' during which they allegedly exchanged contact information and began their affair.

The case highlights the rare use of 'alienation of affection' laws, which allow a spouse to sue a third party believed to be responsible for the failure of their marriage, for financial compensation.
