Blue Jays showing interest in 2.35 ERA reliever to further bolster bullpen
The Toronto Blue Jays are atop the AL East and will look to further add more talent to their roster ahead of the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline on July 31.
The Blue Jays already landed Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles to help solidify the bullpen. Yet, Toronto is looking to add another reliever before the deadline.
MLB insider Derrick Goold of St Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals have discussed a potential deal for reliever Phil Mason.
“Toronto has been among the teams talking to the Cardinals about their relievers, per sources, and both Maton and Matz have drawn interest from other contending clubs because of Maton's postseason seasoning as a setup man and Matz's versatility for the stretch run,” Goold wrote.

Matz was dealt to the Boston Red Sox, so the focus for the Blue Jays is on Maton, who would be another high-leverage reliever for the team.
Maton is 1-3 with a 2.35 ERA in 40 games this season and is 2-for-4 on saves. He’s earning $2 million this season and is a pending free agent, so as a rental, the cost likely wouldn’t be too high.
Maton, meanwhile, says he’d like to stay with the Cardinals, but knows he likely will be traded before the deadline.
“Regardless of what happens, we’ll be ready to stay here or go,” Maton said. “I’m just trying to keep my mind off it as much as possible.”
The 32-year-old right-hander is also 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 26 playoff games over 28 innings.
