The Buffalo Bills recently hosted wide receiver Elijah Moore, who has been on their radar since before the draft, for a visit to explore potential interest in signing him. General Manager Brandon Beane noted that the team's decision to not draft a first or second-round wide receiver opened the door for renewed conversations with Moore. However, the Cleveland Browns, Moore’s former team, complicated matters by placing an unusual unrestricted free agent tender on him at 110% of his previous salary, which restricts negotiations to only Cleveland if he remains unsigned by July 22. Despite this, the Buffalo Bills have time before the deadline to potentially sign Moore, who had a career-high season in 2024 with 61 catches and 538 yards. Moore's past connection with current Buffalo wide receiver Josh Palmer from their high school days adds another layer of interest to the potential signing.

Bills’ Elijah Moore pursuit complicated by unusual Browns contract decision

Elijah Moore visited the Buffalo Bills for discussions about joining the team, following prior communications that were postponed until post-draft evaluations. General Manager Brandon Beane indicated that the Bills’ choice not to draft a wide receiver in the first or second round allowed them to revisit conversations with Moore.

The Cleveland Browns, Moore's previous team, used a rarely invoked unrestricted free agent tender, offering him 110% of his last year's salary, totaling $3.428 million. This move restricts any negotiations to Cleveland if Moore remains unsigned by July 22, complicating his potential signing with other teams.

The unrestricted free agent tender is a strategic mechanism that gives Cleveland the exclusive right to negotiate with Moore beyond the specified deadline, thereby limiting his market options significantly.

Despite the Browns' tender, the Bills still have a window of opportunity to sign Moore before the July 22 deadline, which is crucial given Moore's productive 2024 season where he achieved career highs in receptions and yardage.

Elijah Moore shares a personal connection with Buffalo's newest wide receiver Josh Palmer, as the two were high school teammates at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida, which may play a role in his decision-making process.

Moore's career-high performance in 2024, where he recorded 61 catches for 538 yards and one touchdown, highlights his potential value to the Buffalo Bills' receiving corps.

The interest in Moore is part of Buffalo's strategic approach to strengthen their team without having committed significant early-round draft picks to the wide receiver position.

The Buffalo Bills hosted wide receiver Elijah Moore on a visit on Monday.

Nothing about that is out of the ordinary, and GM Brandon Beane shared a bit about the visit.

"Elijah Moore is here. He's a guy we've spoken to a few times leading up to the draft and we just kind of put a pin in it, just like we did several other positions and said 'hey, let's wait until the draft and see where we're at, see if he's still interested," Beane said on the One Bills Live show. "If we took a guy in the first or second round, he's probably not too interested. But we didn't and so, you know, we picked up those conversations over the weekend.

"He and his wife came up today and visited. So, we'll see. Nothing imminent today or anything like that, but a very good visit and we'll see where it goes."

Something weird happened shortly after Moore visited, though.

The Browns, his former team, placed the unrestricted free agent tender on him.

That rarely used mechanism is a tender from Cleveland to Moore at 110 percent of his salary last season (in this case, $3.428 million).

If Moore remains unsigned by July 22, only Cleveland can negotiate with him for the rest of the season.

That's a pretty wild rule, really.

Luckily for Buffalo, July 22 is a long way away.

If the Bills are going to get Moore, it would likely happen sooner rather than later.

In 2024, Moore had a career-high 61 catches and took those for 538 yards and a lone TD.

Moore was high school teammates with newest Buffalo wide receiver Josh Palmer at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida.
