Astros announce major roster decision amid hot stretch
The Houston Astros sit atop the American League West over two months into the season. With a 39-30 record, the Astros are third in the American League and have a 4.5-game lead over the second-place Seattle Mariners.
A reason they have begun expanding upon their division lead is thanks to a strong June. The Astros have won eight games and lost three in the month of June and are currently on a three-game winning streak.
Amid their hot stretch in June, the Astros are making a roster move to add to their bench. According to Ari Alexander of KPRC2 Houston on Twitter/X, the Astros are calling up utility man Cooper Hummel.

The Move for the Astros comes after outfielder Jacob Melton suffered a sprained ankle in the Astros' win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Hummel, a 30-year-old journeyman veteran, has limited MLB experience since being drafted in 2016.
Across his four different stints in the Major Leagues, Hummel has played for the Astros in 2024, the Baltimore Orioles in 2025, the Seattle Mariners in 2023, and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022.
The majority of his MLB experience came with the Diamondbacks, where in 176 at-bats. Hummel has 31 hits, 20 runs scored, eight doubles, three triples, three home runs, 17 RBIs, 23 walks, and 64 strikeouts.
In his 83-game MLB career, Hummel has an OPS of just .528 and an overall OPS+ of 51. While not a long stint in the Majors, Hummel has still made an impact on the Majors, albeit with a career negative 1.0 WAR.
Overall, with Melton hurt and the Astros needing outfield depth, Hummel is set to join the Astros' roster as Melton recovers. With the Astros already in need of left fielder help, things just got more desperate after the latest injury.
