Andrew Luck or Travis Hunter? FOX Sports picks greatest #12 ever
The number 12 has been worn by two of the most iconic football players ever: Travis Hunter and Andrew Luck. A true generational QB prospect and a player who won the Heisman after incomprehensibly starring on offense and defense. That's not to mention Roger Staubach, another legendary #12. Charles White wore it, too.
But ultimately, it comes down to those two, and FOX Sports determined that the nod should go to Hunter because of his two-way prowess. There just have never really been players like him before.
"Choosing between Hunter, Roger Staubach and Andrew Luck for the greatest college football player to wear No. 12 was a tall task, but when taking into account what role Hunter had in revolutionizing the game and showing what can be done as a standout on both sides of the ball, he's the pick here," FOX argued.
Hunter was a two-time All-American and the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner. He had 98 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense. On the other side of the ball, he had 36 tackles and four interceptions while routinely matching up with and locking down opposing teams' best WRs.
"Hunter is the first player in college football history to win both the Bednarik Award (for the best defensive player in the country) and the Biletnikoff Award (for the best wide receiver of the year). He defines the term 'generational talent,'" the argument concluded.
It's hard to say, but there's a real chance that Hunter would've been the best player to wear whatever number he chose, because he was that good and that revolutionary.
