Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a unilateral three-day cease-fire starting May 8 was met with skepticism by Ukrainian officials, especially as Russian forces launched 100 attack drones across Ukraine, resulting in casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the cease-fire as a manipulation tactic, pointing out that Ukraine had already agreed, under U.S. influence, to a 30-day unconditional cease-fire, which Russia had not honored. Zelensky emphasized that a genuine cease-fire should be immediate, full, and unconditional, lasting at least 30 days to ensure security and guarantee. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov dismissed the idea of a longer cease-fire without detailed negotiations, while reiterating Russia's willingness to engage in direct talks with Ukraine despite questioning Zelensky's legitimacy. Meanwhile, the drone attacks caused significant damage and casualties, with Ukrainian forces managing to down 37 of the drones, as the international community, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, expressed doubt over Russia's intentions for peace.

Zelensky Calls Putin’s 72-Hour Truce Pledge in Russia-Ukraine War ‘Manipulation’

Russian forces launched 100 attack drones across Ukraine, resulting in the death of a child and injuries to several others, just hours after President Putin announced a unilateral three-day cease-fire starting May 8.

President Zelensky called the cease-fire announcement a manipulation, highlighting Ukraine's previous agreement to a U.S.-urged 30-day unconditional cease-fire, which Russia has not upheld.

Zelensky argued that any true cease-fire should be immediate, full, and unconditional, lasting at least 30 days to ensure it is secure and guaranteed, rather than a short-term truce that could lead to further violence.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov dismissed the idea of a longer cease-fire without detailed negotiations and reiterated Russia's offer to hold direct talks with Ukraine, despite questioning the legitimacy of Zelensky's presidency.

The Ukrainian Air Force successfully shot down 37 of the drones launched by Russian forces, with nine drones downed in the Kyiv region, where falling debris caused injuries and a fire at a hotel.

A drone attack in the Dnipro region resulted in the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl and injuries to a 6-year-old girl and two adults, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing conflict.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, after meeting with Zelensky, expressed frustration with Russia's continued bombardment and questioned Putin's genuine desire for peace, suggesting that the situation might need a different approach.
