Akeel Abdul Jamiel, a 45-year-old Iraqi man, was charged with voting illegally in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, with assistance in the investigation from Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Jamiel, who is not a U.S. citizen, cast his vote in upstate New York and is registered as a Conservative Party member, although he is a supporter of Donald Trump. Despite claims by Trump and his allies of widespread noncitizen voting, studies indicate such occurrences are rare. The charge against Jamiel is a misdemeanor that could result in up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. Jamiel has a history of legal troubles, including a past arrest for first-degree assault, and has filed multiple lawsuits asserting rights violations and hardships due to immigration policies.

Akeel Abdul Jamiel, who is not a U.S. citizen, was charged with illegal voting in the 2020 presidential election, with the investigation assisted by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Jamiel cast his vote in Saratoga County, New York, as a registered member of the Conservative Party, marking his first voter registration in the U.S., where he has lived since at least 2005.

Despite the rarity of noncitizen voting, Donald Trump and his allies have claimed it is widespread, and an executive order was issued to review state voting records against federal immigration records.

The charge Jamiel faces is a misdemeanor that carries a potential penalty of up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine, but he was not in custody at the time of reporting.

Jamiel has previously been arrested for first-degree assault and has filed multiple unsuccessful lawsuits, including one against former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, claiming rights violations and hardships due to sanctuary policies.
