Trump's Comments Fuels Speculation About JD Vance Presidential Run

As the midterms inch closer, more talk is being directed to what happens after the pivotal November election. Specifically, who is going to emerge as the top presidential candidates heading into the 2028 election? The obvious frontrunner for the GOP is Vice President JD Vance. But what does he think about that? Read on for all of the details on the ongoing discussions.

Vice President Wants to Wait Until After Midterms to Make a Decision About 2028

Vice President JD Vance is clearly the top prospect to take over the reins from President Donald Trump when his second term is up. However, Vance has been hesitant to address the issue directly. This is in contrast to his boss, a person who brings up the topic frequently.

The vice president has repeatedly said that he does not want to make any decisions until after the upcoming midterm elections. Waiting until the current election cycle is over to explore his options is something that Vance has been consistent about, saying that he will sit down with his wife, Usha, to have that conversation at a later date.

Vance appeared on CBS Sunday Morning over the weekend, suggesting that it is typically Trump who brings up the idea of a future presidential run. In the interview, Vance said that he never brings up the topic; however, "the president brings up a lot of stuff, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately."

Vance said that Trump is a person who enjoys thinking about and discussing politics, describing him as a "political animal" who is fascinated by the whole process. The vice president defended his boss, noting that he raises the topic often because he is curious and enthusiastic. Vance said that Trump is continually questioning what is going to happen next.

The president's approach toward the future Republican Party ticket is more direct than Vance's. During an event last month, Trump turned to the crowd and asked them who they support for the 2028 GOP nomination. He took it one step further, asking directly if they preferred Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump chided the crowd by saying, "Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? All right. Sounds like a good ticket."

Vance Believes Trump Will Back a Potential Run

Despite Trump's ribbing and pitting Vance against Rubio, the vice president expressed confidence that he will have the support of the president. During the CBS interview, Vance said that he is sure that the president will be in his corner should he decide to pursue the presidency, saying, "I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do. But we really just haven't talked about what that thing will be."

Rubio has been quiet about a potential run at the Oval Office. The former senator from the state of Florida has gone on the record to say that he would not seek the GOP nomination if Vance decides to throw his hat into the ring. Meanwhile, the president has not signaled which of the two men he prefers to win the nomination.

The Washington Post previously reported that the vice president may be pushing back his decision about 2028 until after the birth of his fourth child, due in July. While Vance is viewed as the leader for the nod in the GOP, Donald Trump Jr. has also expressed that he may launch a run.

The Democratic field is significantly more crowded. Leading contenders at this early stage include former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Sen. Mark Kelly, and Sen. Cory Booker.

Sunday's interview was to promote the release of Vance's second memoir, "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," on Tuesday. Vance also appeared on ABC's The View to promote the book on Tuesday morning.
