Trump Unveils New Passport Design for America's 250th

A new commemorative passport featuring President Donald Trump's likeness will hit U.S. passport offices later this summer, marking the first time a sitting president's portrait has appeared inside a standard American travel document.

What Trump Revealed

Trump unveiled the latest rendering of the design on Truth Social Friday, posting an image of the passport's interior page alongside the caption, "The U.S.A.'s New Passport, which says, 'Welcome, but be good!'" The design features his portrait superimposed over the text of the Declaration of Independence, with his signature rendered in gold at the bottom of the page. The opposite page displays an image of John Trumbull's painting depicting the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The White House shared the same rendering on its official X account, captioning it "New U.S. Passport to Commemorate America's 250th."

The image is based on Trump's official portrait from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and this is not the first version the administration has shared — an earlier rendering featured a different image of the president before the design was apparently revised.

Why It's Happening

The State Department first announced the limited-edition passport in April as part of the broader celebration of America's 250th anniversary, branding it as a document featuring "custom artwork and enhanced images on the front, back, and inside covers." State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the new design "will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the U.S. passport the most secure documents in the world."

Between 25,000 and 30,000 of the commemorative passports will be available starting shortly before July 4, according to the State Department. The documents will be the default option issued at the Washington Passport Agency for anyone renewing or applying in person there. Applicants who prefer the traditional design can still request one by applying online or through other passport agencies outside Washington.

A Document That Could Outlast His Term

Because U.S. passports remain valid for 10 years, Trump's likeness inside the commemorative document could circulate well beyond the end of his current term. Currently, the only presidents who appear in standard U.S. passports are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, who are depicted together in a two-page illustration of Mount Rushmore. None of the four are shown individually, and none were sitting presidents at the time their likenesses were added.

Part of a Larger Pattern

The passport adds to a growing list of public assets bearing Trump's name or image during his current term. He has placed his name on the U.S. Institute of Peace and on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, though a federal judge later ordered his name removed from the Kennedy Center. His name has also been attached to children's savings accounts known as "Trump accounts," a government prescription drug website called TrumpRX, a Trump-branded visa card for immigrants, and a forthcoming line of Navy battleships designated the "Trump Class."

The White House directed questions about whether the latest rendering represents the final official design to the State Department, which has not yet responded to requests for comment.
