Trump Makes Joke About Twerking at Press Dinner

President Trump spoke at the annual WHCA Dinner on Friday night in Washington, D.C., using some of his time behind the podium to roast singer Nicki Minaj. The president invoked the rapper while making a joke about the WHCA dinner in April that was abruptly cancelled when a gunman breached security and began shooting in the hotel lobby outside the ballroom where the event was well underway.

In his joke on Friday night, Trump said that "After hearing the gunshots, many people yelled, 'Get down!' which caused Nicki Minaj to start twerking. Can you believe it? She's the only one that really understood what that meant."

The joke about Minaj twerking was certainly not on anyone's bingo card heading into the event. What was not a surprise was Trump's roasting of many members of the media, including comedians Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Stephen Colbert, and CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins.

While Trump roasted several of his political adversaries during Friday's dinner at the Waldorf Astoria, Minaj is actually one of the president's biggest supporters lately. After criticizing some of the Trump administration's immigration policies during his first stint in the Oval Office, she has recently been vocal about her support of the president.

Earlier in July, Minaj was a guest at a White House Rose Garden event. She later posted a picture on X of her in the Oval Office alongside the president with the caption,  "Whoa!!!! #WhiteHouseBarbie with her favorite President of all time!!!"

Minaj also attended the Trump Accounts Summit in January, describing herself as Trump's number one fan. A few weeks later, Minaj was a guest at the screening of first lady Melania Trump's controversial documentary, "Melania." The screening was held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a venue that Trump has reshaped during his second term, much to the chagrin of the Kennedy family and Democratic leaders.

Minaj admitted in May that she has supported Trump for years but had been hesitant to speak out about her views out of fear of backlash. In the interview with Time, she noted that the entertainment industry is not known for its support of Trump. Minaj said that "Many celebrities feel the way I do, but they don't say it. Sometimes, you just need one brave person to get the brunt of the impact. I think I am the catalyst for that change." She went on to say that she hopes that when others hear her speak her mind, they will be more emboldened to do the same.

Friday's Rescheduled Dinner Took a Different Tone

Minaj was not in attendance on Friday at the rescheduled WHCA dinner. The event was significantly scaled back due to the security concerns, skipping the traditional red carpet ceremonies and focusing more on the work of the WHCA. The low-key tone of the rescheduled dinner also drew fewer celebrities than typically attend the who's who gathering in the nation's capital.

What was most remarkable about both the April event and Friday's dinner is that President Trump was in attendance at both. The president had previously boycotted the gathering during his other years in the Oval Office.

In addition to making the joke about Minaj twerking, Trump also made headlines when he seemingly announced that he was running for president again in 2028. It is important to note that the U.S. Constitution does not allow a person to run for a third term.
