Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Maryland will close after the 2025 season, as announced by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. This decision is part of a strategic review that found the parks, which sit on a 500-acre property, do not align with the company's long-term growth plans. The parks have been a significant community fixture, providing entertainment and economic benefits, with over 70 full-time employees who will receive severance and other benefits. Originally a wildlife preserve in the 1970s, the site became an amusement park and opened as Six Flags America in 1999, featuring attractions like nine roller coasters, including the historic Wild One. Local officials express regret over the closure but are committed to a redevelopment process that will benefit the community and support economic growth.

Six Flags America in Maryland to close at the end of 2025 season

Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor will cease operations at the end of the 2025 season, following a strategic review by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, which deemed the parks not in line with the company's growth objectives.

Located on a 500-acre site in Bowie, Maryland, the parks have served as a major attraction and economic hub, employing approximately 70 full-time staff who will be offered severance and other benefits post-closure.

The site has a rich history, initially functioning as a wildlife preserve in the 1970s before its transformation into an amusement park, eventually opening as Six Flags America in 1999.

Among its many attractions, the park is home to nine roller coasters, including The Wild One, which is recognized as one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the United States.

Local authorities, including Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara H. Jackson, acknowledge the parks' role in shaping the county’s identity and express a commitment to a redevelopment plan that will prioritize community benefits and economic development.
