Secret Service Agent Accidentally Shoots Himself While Escorting Jill Biden
A United States Secret Service agent accidentally shot himself at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday morning while on a protective assignment escorting former first lady Jill Biden. The agent was transported to a nearby hospital and is listed in stable condition.
What Happened
The incident occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m. near the 1 PIA Way access point and the Pennsylvania Tower at Philadelphia International Airport. According to Philadelphia police, the agent accidentally discharged his firearm while traveling in an unmarked Chevrolet SUV.
Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported the agent to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. No other injuries were reported and airport operations were not disrupted.
Jill Biden Was Not Present
Secret Service spokesperson Nate Herring confirmed the agent was on duty at the time of the accidental discharge. Herring said the former first lady was not present when the shooting occurred and her movement was not impacted.
"There was no impact to the protectee's movement and they were not present at the time of the incident," Herring said. "There were no reported injuries to any other individuals."
Sources told reporters the agent suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg. A heavy police presence was reported outside the American Airlines ticket counter in Terminal C, where the doors of a black Chevrolet Suburban were open and surrounded by police tape.
Investigation Underway
The Secret Service's Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the incident. Philadelphia police said authorities held the scene for investigation following the accidental discharge.
