Samsung to inject $1 billion into Nvidia- and KKR-backed AI infrastructure firm
Context:
A Samsung-led group is backing Helix Digital Infrastructure, an AI-focused infrastructure company, to accelerate the global rollout of AI data centers and the supporting power and network systems. The move comes amid rising competition in the AI infrastructure space and aims to leverage Samsung’s broad capabilities—from semiconductors to cooling systems and batteries—across its affiliates. Led by former AWS CEO Adam Selipsky, Helix seeks to expand hyperscale data centers, power generation and transmission, and fiber networks. The investment signals a coordinated push by Samsung and partners to deepen involvement in the AI infrastructure buildout and foster cross-company collaboration. The broader outlook is to accelerate deployment and scale in key markets, with ongoing expansion expected to follow the initial funding.
Dive Deeper:
Samsung Electronics and its affiliated entities will invest in Helix Digital Infrastructure, a company formed by KKR and backed by Nvidia, as part of a coordinated investment package.
Samsung Electronics will contribute half of the total funding, with Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance supplying the remaining amount.
Helix focuses on infrastructure needed to support rising AI demand, including hyperscale data centers, power generation, transmission and distribution, and fiber-optic networks, positioning itself to address critical bottlenecks in AI deployment.
Adam Selipsky, formerly the CEO of Amazon Web Services, leads Helix, with founding investors including KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia, and Vistra, among others.
The investment adds to more than $10 billion in funds already committed to Helix, highlighting the scale of capital backing the company as it expands its horizon in AI infrastructure.
Samsung aims to leverage its diverse capabilities across semiconductors, cooling, data center construction, and batteries to bolster Helix’s rollout and to deepen cross-affiliate collaboration in the global AI infrastructure market.
The move signals a strategy to accelerate near-term deployment of AI data centers while strengthening Samsung’s role in ongoing infrastructure development and potential future collaborations.
