Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to pull state funding from the city of San Marcos if it proceeds with a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel. Abbott's letter to Mayor Jane Hughson criticized the city council for not condemning Hamas while considering the resolution, which he views as antisemitic and anti-Texas. He emphasized that Texas law prohibits government entities from supporting efforts to boycott Israel, and any violations could jeopardize their funding. The resolution is seen by some council members as a test of moral values rather than a political statement, with debates highlighting the connections between domestic and international policy decisions. The council's vote on May 6 will determine if the resolution passes, potentially affecting future grant agreements with the governor's office.

Republican gov slams city for considering 'antisemitic' resolution, threatens to pull funding

Governor Abbott's letter to San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson criticized the city council's resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza, arguing it does not address the October 7 massacre by Hamas and labeling it antisemitic.

Abbott warned that passing the resolution could lead to the termination of state funding, as it violates Texas law, which prohibits contracts with entities boycotting Israel.

Texas law Code § 2271.002 requires entities entering into contracts worth $100,000 or more with the state to certify they do not boycott Israel, with violations risking financial penalties.

San Marcos City Council member Alyssa Garza promoted the resolution as a means to challenge large government actions, connecting international conflicts to domestic policy issues like housing and education cuts.

Council member Amanda Rodriguez argued the resolution is a moral test rather than a political issue, urging Jewish community members to dissociate the resolution from antisemitism.

Abbott's office has begun reviewing San Marcos' active grants to assess compliance with state laws, and future grants will be contingent on the city's actions regarding the resolution.

The city council is set to vote on the resolution on May 6, and its passage could result in the governor's office reevaluating financial support and agreements with San Marcos.
