One Dead in Shooting at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico
A shooting at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico on Tuesday evening left one person dead and another injured, military officials confirmed. The incident prompted a base-wide lockdown that was later lifted after security forces declared the area safe.
What Happened
Reports of an active shooter came in at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time, prompting the 49th Wing to place the 93-square-mile base on immediate lockdown. Security forces responded and cleared the area before lifting the lockdown shortly after.
The person wounded in the shooting was transported for medical treatment. The identities of both individuals have not been released, and it remains unclear whether those involved were members of the military.
"Emergency personnel are responding to the situation and there is no threat at this time," the 49th Wing said in a statement.
Details Still Emerging
Military officials have not released information about the gunman, how the shooting unfolded, or where on the base it occurred. No additional details were provided by the 49th Wing when reached for further comment Tuesday evening.
The base's convenience store, known as the "shopette," was closed until further notice following the incident. Officials did not confirm whether the shooting took place in or near the store.
