Seven homes were reportedly red-tagged because of direct safety concerns, while another 24 properties lost safe vehicular access. The American Red Cross established a temporary shelter at Malibu High School for residents who needed somewhere to go. City and state officials also warned that the situation could deteriorate further as high tides and additional rain affected the coastline.

The Weather May Have Helped Set the Stage

It is widely believed that the remnants of Hurricane Marie may have played a major role in the formation and expansion of the Malibu sinkhole. Heavy rains and dangerous waves battered the coastal communities of Southern California throughout Labor Day weekend. Marie did not make landfall in Southern California, but its effects contributed to heavy surf and additional stress along an already vulnerable coastline.

California officials have pointed to coastal erosion as a major concern, although the exact cause of the most recent Malibu sinkhole is still under investigation. That distinction matters.
