The shooting took place at a family barbecue on Cherryhill Avenue in southeastern Houston just before 1 a.m. local time, resulting in one confirmed death and at least 14 injuries, with several individuals in critical condition undergoing surgery.

Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu of the Houston Police Department reported that officers arrived shortly after being alerted to ongoing gunfire and assisted in moving victims to a nearby Jack in the Box for assessment before hospital transport.

The shooting was initiated by an uninvited guest who, after being asked to leave the gathering, went to his car and started shooting; it remains unclear if the weapon was already on his person or retrieved from the vehicle.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva indicated that it is too early to determine if there was any prior relationship between the shooter and the attendees, and the motive behind the attack is still unknown.

The situation led to a chaotic scene with the incident spreading over several blocks, causing people to run and flee, some of whom self-transported to hospitals for their injuries.

Despite detaining several people for questioning, the main suspect has not been apprehended as of the latest updates, and the investigation is ongoing.

The injured individuals were transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Ben Taub Hospital, but no immediate updates on their conditions were available.
