Gunman Opens Fire at White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Trump Unharmed

President Donald Trump was rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and all cabinet members were unharmed. A Secret Service agent was shot at close range but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and was later released from the hospital.

What Happened Inside the Hotel

The incident unfolded during the annual dinner, one of Washington’s most prominent press events. Attendees described hearing at least five loud shots that echoed throughout the ballroom, after which Secret Service agents immediately moved Trump and other officials out of the hotel.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, had checked into the Washington Hilton as a guest. He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. According to Washington, D.C. interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll, Allen fired his shotgun at a Secret Service agent and attempted to breach a security checkpoint to force his way into the ballroom. He was taken down by agents on the scene.

Trump’s Response

About an hour after being evacuated, Trump posted on Truth Social that the shooter had been apprehended, writing: "Quite an evening in DC, Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job." He then addressed reporters from the White House briefing room still wearing his tuxedo from the dinner.

Trump praised the agent who was struck: The officer was shot "from a very close distance with a very powerful gun," and the vest "saved" him. He described the suspect as a "sick person" and said the correspondents’ dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. The administration has faced other security challenges in recent months, including ongoing tensions over media scrutiny of law enforcement decisions.

The Suspect and Charges

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said charges were imminent, including multiple counts surrounding the shooting and firearms possession. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro indicated Allen would be arraigned Monday. Authorities said he appeared to have been acting alone, and investigators were still working to establish his motive.

CNN's Kristen Holmes reported on X that the suspect reportedly referred to himself as "The Friendly Federal Assassin" in a manifesto shared with family members before the incident.

A Striking Historical Echo

The Washington Hilton is one of the most historically significant sites in American presidential security history. It was outside the same hotel on March 30, 1981, that John Hinckley Jr. shot President Ronald Reagan. This marks Trump’s third assassination attempt. In July 2024, a gunman wounded Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. That August, a second man was arrested near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach.

Reactions

Officials from both parties condemned the attack.

Speaker Mike Johnson, who was at the event with his wife Kelly, posted on X: "We're thankful no innocent people were harmed and everyone is now safe. We're grateful as always for the law enforcement and first responders who acted so quickly to bring the situation under control. Praying for our country tonight."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries posted: "Thankful for the swift law enforcement action to protect everyone from gunfire at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Praying for the safety of those who may remain in harm's way. The violence and chaos in America must end."

The Secret Service agent was released from the hospital in good condition. The White House Correspondents’ Association said it was working with the administration on rescheduling. Trump had made headlines just days earlier for participating in a national Bible-reading marathon from the Oval Office. Given the broader instability defining this political moment, how the administration responds and what charges Allen faces will become clearer in the days ahead.
