Graham Platner Drops Out of Maine Senate Race Amid Allegations of Sexual Misconduct

Democrats are scrambling after Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner announced on Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign. Here are the details on what led to this decision, as well as what is next for the Democrats heading into the crucial midterms.

Graham Platner Announces Withdrawal from Race in Video Message

After weeks of speculation, Platner finally pulled the plug on his senatorial campaign. The Democrat from Maine released a video statement on X, noting that he plans to file the necessary paperwork to formally withdraw from the race. The decision means that Democrats will need to appoint a new person to take on stalwart Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the midterm battle.

Platner's decision to withdraw comes amid growing controversy surrounding allegations of violence and sexual assault. While Platner had continued to deny the allegations, a new report from CNN and Politico featuring a woman claiming Platner raped her five years ago was too much for him to overcome.

Platner used part of the 11-minute video announcement to criticize the Democratic Party establishment, saying that they are using untrue allegations to undermine his movement. Throughout the video, Platner continued to assert that the allegations were false, saying that "they are being used by the political establishment to put structural pressure on us. We live in a political system that is not built for normal people. It is a system built structurally to make sure that movements like ours cannot flourish."

While the video was being released on Wednesday evening, Platner simultaneously conducted a meeting with his campaign staff to deliver the news. The campaign was under increasing pressure to decide as the state's July 13 deadline for candidate withdrawal was looming.

While Platner easily won the June primary race to represent the Democrats in the crucial election, his support had been eroding in recent weeks as more women have spoken up about the alleged abuse. Most recently, Jenny Racicot said that Platner showed up drunk at her house in 2021 and forcibly had sex with her as she told him to stop. Racicot said that he knocked over a sewing cabinet during the struggle, leaving a needle stuck in her leg.

Racicot said that she decided to break off contact with Platner rather than report him to law enforcement authorities.  Many Democrats called on Platner to drop out of the race after Racicot came out with her story. This included one of Platner's closest congressional allies, independent Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The allegations of sexual abuse were just one of the many controversies that Platner has had to fend off since launching his campaign. For instance, he was forced to defend a tattoo of a skull and crossbones that allegedly has Nazi connotations.

There were also reports of deleted social media posts in which Platner referred to himself as a communist and said that all police were bastards. Platner also disavowed past social media posts that said that rural White Americans were racist and stupid. He defended the posts by saying he made them at a time when he was angry and disillusioned about the state of the country.

Prior to Racicot's allegations, Platner had been accused of other instances of unsettling behavior by women that he dated. In addition to Racicot coming out recently with more details, another ex-girlfriend came forward this week to describe how Platner allegedly grabbed her and left bruises.

What Is Next for the Democrats?

The Democrats are now in rush mode to put forth a candidate to take on Collins. Potential options include Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former state Sen. Troy Jackson, and former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention Nirav Shah. Dan Kleban, a brewery owner and Senate hopeful, also officially declared for the race on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, the Maine Democratic Party approved a plan to hold a nominating convention to tap a new nominee in the event that Platner left the race. A new nominee will be submitted to Secretary of State Bellows by 5 pm on July 27.

Following Platner's announcement, the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee confirmed that it was launching a fund to raise money to support the new nominee. The party acknowledges that it is now behind in the game and will need to scramble in order to have a chance at defeating Collins.

The stakes could not be higher, as Maine is seen as a possible state for Democrats to flip in the November 3 election. The Democrats need a net gain of four seats in order to take over the majority in the Senate.

Democratic leaders are hopeful that they can flip Collins' seat to their side. Vice President Kamala Harris won the state by almost 7 percentage points in 2024, signaling that it may be ripe for a Democratic takeover.
