Luca Guadagnino's DC Movie 'Sgt. Rock' Not Moving Forward, Mike Faist Was in Talks for a Role!
The DC Studios film 'Sgt. Rock', directed by Luca Guadagnino and featuring Colin Farrell, has been shelved and will no longer proceed as planned. Initially set to begin shooting in England with a reported budget of $70 million, the project faced setbacks due to the logistical challenges of shooting outdoors. Additionally, doubts about Guadagnino's lack of experience in action films may have contributed to the decision to pause the project. The film's script, written by Justin Kuritzkes, involved a plot where Sgt. Rock teams up with a female French resistance fighter to locate the mystical Spear of Destiny before the Nazis could acquire it. There is a possibility that the project will be revisited at the end of the year with a potential summer shoot in 2026.
The 'Sgt. Rock' movie's production has been stopped, despite initial plans to shoot in the summer with a $70 million budget, due to the complexities of outdoor shooting schedules.
Director Luca Guadagnino, known for 'Call Me By Your Name', was attached to the project, with Colin Farrell cast as the titular DC Comics hero, but the lack of Guadagnino's action movie experience led to hesitations from higher-ups.
Casting efforts were underway, with Mike Faist in talks for a role and a female French resistance fighter character already cast, as the film was set to depict the combat unit Easy Company battling Nazi forces.
The storyline was to revolve around Sgt. Rock and a French resistance fighter's mission to find the Spear of Destiny, a mystical artifact with supernatural powers, before it falls into Nazi hands.
DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran had supported the project due to the strong script by Justin Kuritzkes, though production issues caused a reevaluation of the project's feasibility.
Despite being shelved, the project is not entirely canceled and may be reassessed for a potential 2026 summer shoot, leaving room for future developments.
Sgt. Rock, a character who first appeared in comics in 1959, was to be brought to life in a film that blended historical war elements with supernatural themes.

Casting was still underway to determine who would play the men of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe.
Challengers star Mike Faist reportedly was lined up for a role, and a female French resistance fighter had also been cast, according to the report.
As for the reason why, an insider said it came down to the project’s scheduling needs of shooting outdoors.
The insider said that the reportedly $70 million-budgeted project is not going away, and will be re-assessed at “the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026.”
Another source suggested that because Luca had no action movie experience, higher ups “may have wavered in their confidence.”
DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran initially said they made room for it in the release schedule due to the strength of the script by Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote Challengers and Queer.
The story is said to involve Rock teaming with up with the female French resistance fighter to find the mystical Spear of Destiny, used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, which was said to have supernatural properties, before the Nazis get their hands on it.
